$109 Million is TOO MUCH
A New Neary is NOT NEEDED
A Better Alternative is PLAN B
The Neary Building Committee (NBC) is proposing a $109 million new school that – by its own data – is actually not needed, and will add thousands of dollars to Southborough annual tax bills in addition to annual increases (starting with 7.37% in FY26).
What is PLAN B?
- Woodward, Finn and Trottier (WITHOUT Neary) already have enough space that can be reconfigured with minimal adjustments to meet projected student populations, while maintaining our recognized educational excellence.
- At 130,000 square feet, Trottier Middle School is the largest school in Southborough and underutilized with just three grades. The proposed four grade Neary replacement is 99,564 square feet – 30% smaller than the three-grade Trottier. Why build a new, smaller four-grade school when Trottier could easily accommodate the same needs without the enormous price tag? We would be adding nearly 100,000 sf of extra space that will need to be heated, cooled and maintained – an unnecessary expense.
- A new Neary will place an excessive, unnecessary tax burden on Seniors and younger homeowners struggling to stay in town
- Tests on the Parkerville Road landfill have already determined that arsenic and other dangerous heavy metals have leached into the high groundwater around the Neary site. Because the groundwater flows northward – and there will be considerable site excavation – this contamination presents a potential danger to the nearly 20 homes on Parkerville Road that have wells and no town water
Southborough deserves a solution that is fiscally responsible while ensuring our children have the schools and resources needed to support our recognized high level of quality education.
After all, it is not the buildings but the faculty, staff, community resources and support that make our education system exemplary. Let’s choose a path that maximizes our existing assets and provides a sustainable, affordable future for all town residents. Find out more about the Plan B!
